Hoyo de Monterrey

In the heart of the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone lies San Juan y Martinez, the birthplace of Hoyo de Monterrey. A gate on the town’s central square engraved with ‘Hoyo de Monterrey’ leads to the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera. José Gener. 1860’.

A ‘hole’ literally means a low-lying position. The plantation is positioned low-lying on the banks of the San Juan y Martinez river. An 1865 Habanos brand was first named after José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona.
