A Solid Addition for Medium-Bodied Enthusiasts
From my years of collecting Cuban cigars, the Montecristo Open Slam has earned its place in my humidor as a reliable smoke. The Geniales size (50 ring gauge, 140mm) offers excellent construction with a smooth, even burn that rewards careful storage. Compared to the Bolivar Belicosos, which I consider a bolder, more aggressive smoke, the Open Slam delivers a more approachable medium profile with subtle cedar and coffee notes that won't overwhelm newer collectors. The draw can occasionally feel slightly tight on the first third, requiring a quick touch-up, but it opens up nicely after the first inch. At the equivalent of roughly $8-10 per stick when purchased in boxes of 20, this represents solid value for a well-aged Cuban. I smoked this during an evening session at my club last month, and it paired well with a mild bourbon. The aging potential is respectable, though I'd rank it slightly below the Belicosos for long-term investment value.
