First Third:

The journey begins with a classic Montecristo introduction, characterized by a punchy yet refined delivery. Smokers are immediately greeted with notes of toasted cedar and dry hay, underpinned by a distinct espresso bean bitterness that defines the brand's profile. The draw is consistently perfect, offering copious amounts of creamy white smoke. There is a subtle floral undertone that dances on the retro-hale, providing a delicate balance to the robust earthy opening.

Mid-Section:

As the burn line progresses past the first inch, the No. 2 evolves significantly, showcasing the complexity that has earned it legendary status. The initial harshness mellows into a rich, buttery texture. The primary cedar notes are now complemented by sweeter nuances of raw cocoa and a hint of citrus zest. The combustion remains razor-sharp, and the ash holds firm, demonstrating the superior rolling skills of the Cuban torcedores. The strength builds gradually, transitioning from a medium start toward a medium-full body.

Final Third:

The finale is intense and satisfying, demanding the smoker's full attention. The flavor profile deepens into darker territory, with leather, black pepper, and mineral notes taking center stage. The sweetness recedes, replaced by a savory, almost meaty character that lingers long on the palate. It is a robust finish that avoids harshness if smoked slowly, leaving a lasting impression of spice and earth on the finish.

Founded in 1935 by Alonso Menéndez and Pepe García, the Montecristo brand was named after Alexandre Dumas' famous novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo,' which was a favorite among the cigar rollers (torcedores) at the factory. Initially produced at the H. Upmann factory, the brand quickly rose to prominence due to its consistent quality and distinctive flavor profile. The No. 2 vitola was introduced as part of the standard range and eventually eclipsed all other sizes in popularity, becoming the benchmark for the Pirámides shape. Despite nationalization and the shifting landscape of the Cuban cigar industry, Montecristo has maintained its status as the world's most recognized and sought-after Habano, with the No. 2 serving as its flagship export.

  • Rum: The Montecristo No. 2 pairs exceptionally well with a premium aged rum like Havana Club Selección de Maestros. The rum's rich, smoky sweetness and hints of vanilla complement the cigar's cedar and cocoa notes without overpowering the palate.
  • Coffee: A traditional Cuban Espresso (Café Cubano) is the ideal morning or mid-day companion. The intense, sugary kick of the coffee cuts through the cigar's earthiness, enhancing the toasted nut and espresso bean flavors inherent in the blend.
  • Cognac: For an evening indulgence, a glass of Hennessy XO provides a luxurious pairing. The deep dried fruit and oak notes of the Cognac mirror the cigar's complexity, while the spirit's smooth finish balances the spicy, leathery end of the final third.

    Product Description

The Montecristo No. 2 stands as the undisputed king of the torpedo vitola, commanding a reputation that transcends the humidors of novice smokers and seasoned connoisseurs alike. As the best-selling Cuban cigar on the global market, this iconic Parejo-shaped masterpiece represents the pinnacle of Havana's blending expertise. It is a cigar that defines the standard for the torpedo format, offering a flawless construction that has been meticulously maintained by the H. Upmann factory for decades. Its distinctive pointed cap allows for a customizable draw, making it a technical favorite for those who appreciate the art of the cut.

Hand-rolled using the finest Vuelta Abajo tobaccos, the No. 2 is renowned for its impeccable construction and signature oily, colorado wrapper. The cigar is a testament to the Montecristo brand's commitment to consistency, featuring a seamless cap and a firm bunch that ensures an even burn and ample smoke output. While often counterfeited due to its popularity, an authentic Montecristo No. 2 offers a visual and tactile quality that is instantly recognizable to the trained eye, characterized by its elegant presentation in the distinctive yellow Montecristo cabinet boxes.

This cigar is an essential addition to any serious collection and serves as a benchmark against which all other torpedoes are measured. Montecristo No.2 Not Worth the Hype

Smoked through a box over the past month during evening walks. The Montecristo No.2 has a legendary reputation, but honestly? Disappointed. At 52 ring gauge and 6 1/8 inches, construction should be consistent box to box - it wasn't. Some burned evenly, others canoed badly. Draw was hit or miss, with a few plugged cigars that killed the experience. Flavor-wise, you get classic Montecristo cocoa and leather, but it doesn't evolve much. People call this the best budget cuban cigar for daily smoking, but the quality issues make it frustrating. For my rotation, the Partagas Serie E No. 2 wins hands down - better construction, more complexity, similar price point. The No.2 isn't terrible, just not the daily driver it's cracked up to be. Three out of five because expectations weren't met.

A Solid Choice for Cigar Lovers

My husband is a cigar enthusiast, so I bought this Montecristo No.2 review as a gift for our anniversary. The presentation was elegant - the cedar box felt substantial and looked impressive under the tree. He immediately gravitated toward the Pirámides shape; the torpedo style is his favorite. The recipient (my husband) smoked his first one on our anniversary night and thoroughly enjoyed the medium to full body profile. Comparing it to Bolivar Belicosos, which he's also tried, he said the Montecristo had a slightly smoother draw and more complex notes. The only minor criticism would be the price - these aren't cheap, though the box of 25 does offer better value per stick. The burn was even and the smoking time around 45-50 minutes was perfect for a special occasion. Would absolutely buy again for gifts.
