When you first light up a ring gauge of 55, you have to be patient with the flame to ensure the entire foot is glowing evenly. Once you get it going, the Leyenda surprises you. I expected a heavy punch immediately, but it starts off with a sophisticated, restrained character. The initial draws produce thick, heavy clouds of smoke that taste primarily of dry cedar and a faint, sweet vanilla. There is a slight vegetal tang in the first few minutes—think fresh moss or damp hay—but it quickly gives way to a creamy, woody core.

As the burn moves past the first third, the Leyenda builds momentum. Roasted almonds and a distinct honey sweetness emerge, with damp earth adding a savoury counterpoint. The milk chocolate that defines Montecristo's character shows up strongly here, thick and coating. White pepper develops on the retrohale, adding structure without aggression. Citrus peel provides unexpected brightness against the heavier tones.

The final act is where the Leyenda earns its name. The body pushes firmly into medium-full, with the sweetness giving ground to a spicier, more intense finish. Roasted coffee joins the chocolate, while the earth notes deepen and darken. The pepper sharpens but remains balanced by persistent honey and almond. It finishes long and complex—rich, oily smoke that coats the palate.

The brand was named after the Alexandre Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo," which was a favourite story among the torcedores.
