For aficionados of Cuban tobacco, few events carry the weight of the Partagás 150th Anniversary release. Unveiled in 1995, this collection was not merely a commercial product but a tribute to a towering legacy in the cigar world. It honored the founding of the Partagás factory in 1845, an institution that has become synonymous with Havana’s rich tobacco heritage. This release was designed to celebrate a century and a half of craftsmanship, cementing its status as a landmark entry in the history of premium cigars.

An Exclusivity Beyond Reach

The scarcity of this collection is what truly sets it apart from other commemorative editions. Habanos S.A. produced exactly 150 numbered humidors for the global market, a number that directly mirrors the anniversary being celebrated. Because of this severely limited production run, acquiring one of these units became an instant challenge for collectors, creating a secondary market defined by intense competition and high premiums. Each unit was individually numbered, transforming every humidor into a unique artifact rather than a standard retail item.
Beyond the main production run, the project's development phase gave rise to three distinct prototype humidors. These test units, created to finalize the design and functionality of the collection, add an additional layer of fascination for dedicated enthusiasts. Finding one of these prototypes is an even more improbable feat than securing a production model, making them the stuff of legend among serious accumulators of Cuban tobacciana.
A Masterpiece of Preservation
The cabinet itself was engineered to be more than just a container; it was built as a high-performance preservation vessel. Unlike standard wooden boxes that rely on passive humidification, this humidor was equipped with an integrated electronic humidification system. This advanced technology ensured that the internal environment remained perfectly stable, actively regulating moisture to protect the valuable cigars stored within. This focus on long-term preservation indicated that the creators intended these cigars to be aged for decades, rather than consumed immediately.
Visual Authentication
Authenticity is paramount in the world of rare cigars, and this collection addressed that concern with specific design elements. Every cigar inside the humidor features a unique band dedicated to the anniversary. This "150 Aniversario" branding serves as an immediate visual differentiator, separating these celebratory smokes from the standard Partagás production line. For collectors, this band is a seal of prestige, confirming that the cigar is part of one of the most exclusive releases of the 1990s.
The Trio of Vitolas

Inside each cabinet, buyers found a total of 150 cigars divided equally among three distinct formats. This curated selection offered a balance between a brand-new creation and two beloved classics, providing a comprehensive survey of the brand's capabilities.
The Exclusive 109
The star of the collection was undoubtedly the 109 vitola. This format was developed specifically for this anniversary and was not part of the standard Partagás portfolio, making it a unique find. Measuring 184 mm (7¼ inches) in length with a ring gauge of 50, this handmade cigar offers a substantial smoking experience. It is a "Grandes" in every sense, designed to deliver the brand's characteristic richness over an extended period.
Classic Favorites: Coronas Grandes and Robustos
Alongside the exclusive release, the humidor included two established favorites to ground the collection in familiar territory.
- Coronas Grandes: This format represents the timeless elegance of Cuban cigar making. With a length of 155 mm (6⅛ inches) and a ring gauge of 42, it offers a more slender, traditional draw. Each humidor contained 50 of these handmade cigars, allowing smokers to enjoy a refined session that balances elegance with the robust Partagás flavor profile.
- Robustos: Often cited as one of the most popular formats globally, the Robusto needs little introduction. This compact powerhouse measures 124 mm (4⅞ inches) with a ring gauge of 50. It is renowned for delivering a complete flavor journey in a shorter timeframe, making it a favorite for modern enthusiasts. Like the other vitolas, 50 of these handmade cigars were included in every box.
Together, these three formats provided a diverse tasting menu, ranging from the specific novelty of the 109 to the reliable excellence of the Robusto, all secured within a state-of-the-art preservation system.
