Product Presentation: Box of 20
First Third
The Open J opens with an inviting lightness that sets it apart from the core Montecristo range. Clean cedar and fresh hay are the first clear notes, delivered through a cool, easy draw. There is a gentle earthiness underneath — more garden soil than deep loam — and a subtle nuttiness that hints at the toasted almonds the blend will develop. The body is firmly mild-to-medium, making this a comfortable smoke from the first puff. A faint sweetness on the lips, like raw sugar, adds charm.
Mid-Section
The middle section fills out the profile without dramatically changing it. The cedar warms and deepens, joined by a definite coffee note — light roast rather than espresso. A touch of dark chocolate emerges, providing richness to the otherwise refined experience. The smoke takes on a creamier texture through this phase, and a very mild pepper appears on the retrohale. The wider Trabuco gauge keeps combustion temperatures low, making the transitions smooth and unhurried.
Final Third
The Open J finishes with a gentle build in intensity. The earth notes become more present, while the coffee darkens slightly. Leather makes a brief appearance, adding a savoury edge to the final draws. The cedar remains consistent throughout, providing continuity, and the finish is clean with a mild caramel sweetness that lingers pleasantly. No harshness develops, even as the cigar is smoked to the nub.

Montecristo stands as perhaps the most recognizable name in premium Cuban cigars, with a legacy spanning nearly a century. Founded in 1935 in Havana's iconic Partagas factory, the brand quickly rose to prominence through its exceptional quality and distinctive flavor profile that became the benchmark for Cuban cigars worldwide. The Montecristo Open line, introduced in 2009, represented a deliberate expansion of the brand's portfolio to appeal to modern palates while maintaining traditional Cuban craftsmanship. The Open J Trabuco specifically was created to meet growing demand for slightly larger vitolas within the medium-bodied category, offering smokers a more substantial smoking experience without the intensity of the brand's fuller offerings. Each Montecristo Open J Trabuco continues to be hand-rolled by skilled torcedors in Cuba, using time-honored techniques passed down through generations, ensuring that every cigar bearing the iconic gold and red Montecristo band delivers the quality that has made this brand synonymous with Cuban cigar excellence.

The Montecristo Open J is a Trabuco format Cuban cigar presented in boxes of 20. Part of the Montecristo Open line, it delivers a lighter, more approachable interpretation of the brand's profile through a slightly larger ring gauge that produces a cool, comfortable draw.
This mild-to-medium cigar suits both newcomers to Cuban tobacco and experienced smokers seeking a reliable, balanced daily smoke. The Open J offers cedar, cream, and gentle spice in a well-paced session, emphasising accessibility without sacrificing the quality that the Montecristo name demands.
The wrapper is a golden-brown Colorado shade, seamless and cleanly applied, with a light sheen. The overall profile delivers cream, light wood, gentle nuttiness, and a trace of white pepper, with a light floral quality adding brightness. The Open line is deliberately lighter than the Numbered series, and the J embodies that philosophy clearly. The draw is open and consistent, producing a generous volume of mild, aromatic smoke. A mild coffee note and soft baking spice warm the finish, while cedar persists as a pleasant constant. The construction is consistently reliable with an even burn and firm ash. Crafted using premium Vuelta Abajo tobaccos, the Open J delivers consistent quality in every box.

The Montecristo Open J is the smallest in the Open line and it's a great little cigar for a 15-minute smoke. Mild and creamy with light cedar notes. I enjoy these with my morning coffee on the balcony. Nothing complex, just pure relaxation in a compact format.
