Monte Open J Falls Short of Expectations
Grabbed a box of Montecristo Open J from a shop in Tampa last month— figured I'd see what the buzz was about. At 50 ring gauge and 140mm, it's a solid vitola that looks impressive in the humidor. Construction started well with a nice firm feel, but the burn went uneven about halfway through, requiring two touch-ups. That's a red flag for a cigar in this price range. The flavor profile is decent—earth and light spice in the first half—but it flattens out dramatically in the final third, leaving a slightly bitter tail. Compared to the Bolivar Belicosos, which deliver far more complexity and a consistent draw, the Open J feels like a missed opportunity. I get that Montecristo has brand prestige, but this one doesn't earn it. For the money, I'd grab a box of Belicosos instead. This is a forgettable smoke that doesn't justify the reputation.
